NHS Newcomers

New NHS Members,
Welcome to National Honor Society! I'm sure at this point you've heard enough about what NHS is and such so I'll spare you the sermon. This blog will mostly be reminders about volunteer opportunities, upcoming meetings, and recaps of events that have happened. Just be sure to check the blog as often as possible, I think I'll make a list of those who don't read the blog just to embarrass them. I think there will be a meeting this week in Ms. Lowther's room during BEAST period. Remember, it's never to early to start volunteering! And remember: Belong, Explore, Achieve, Succeed, Together...

Love,
Joe

Senior Project Shame List

The following seniors haven't submitted a plan for their senior projects:

  • Joel Alemseged
  • Alexander Edgerton
  • Max Freier
  • Megan Jacot
  • Leah John
  • Michaela Leimberer
  • Alan Ojambo
  • Keith Phelps
  • Tyler Redden
  • Adam Reece
  • Nate Rue
  • Treanna Taylor

From Ms. Kahn:
"Remember, you don't have to have it done, but you need the plan approved. This is already a month overdue. If you do not see me either with your information or for help, you will be dropped from NHS.
We'd hate it if you missed out on the pinning ceremony. I can help you find a project, no biggy, just be responsible and take care of it."

Senior Project: Polar Bear Plunge

Michael's senior project, the Polar Bear Plunge, went off without a hitch on Saturday. Congrats to Michael on a project well done! Without further ado, here are some pictures of the event from Peder Erickson, in reverse chronological order:

Congrats on a job well done!

The "WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO!?!" moment.

The jump!

A large, inflatable polar bear greets the contenders!

The only thing standing in the way of victory are two walking M&Ms.

12/22 Meeting Photo Recap

Today we took it easy the day before Winter Break! We went over the usual business and volunteer opportunities before we started making Holiday Cards for the staff at Como.

Before we get into the fun photos, here's a recap of what we went over:
  • If you're interested in the Polar Bear Plunge you can sign up over break and start getting donations! Michael will be posting instructions on Facebook later this week, so talk to him if you have any questions.
  • If you're interested in volunteering at the East Side Learning Center please give Ms. Lowther your email so she can forward you the application. If you have questions about how it works, talk to Gina or Sam, who did it last year.
  • Thank you to everyone who helped Gina's awesome Toys for Tots project! It was a great success that had over 100 toys donated!
Without further ado, here are the awesome photos of our card-making, thanks to Chung! (with the occasional UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER!):

Barnes & Noble Gift Wrapping Fundraiser

A couple of NHS members wrapped gifts at Barnes & Noble last weekend to make some money for NHS. Check out Claire's photos of the shenanigans:

12/8 Meeting Recap

For our second meeting with the newly inducted members, everybody got a sticker as they walked into the auditorium. Then we got updates on volunteer opportunities:
  • Toys for Tots (with Gina) - Donate any toys to Gina ASAP for her senior project toy drive
  • Polar Bear Plunge (with Michael) - Sign up at www.plungemn.org under White Bear Lake, team name "Chilly Cougars"
Next, and more fun, we divided into groups based on our stickers. In our groups, we talked a little about the requirements of NHS and got to know each other. We'll be working in these groups for the next few weeks to get to know each other, so make friends with your group members!

Just to recap, for any new members reading this, the requirements are:
  • $20.00 in dues (Checks payable to Como Park) to be given to Jared, Sophie or Rachel ASAP
  • 40+ hours of volunteering this year (10 must be at school or in the community)
  • Participate in the Senior Pinning Ceremony at the end of the year (more details will come as this gets closer, so don't worry about it yet)
  • Keep being awesome

12/4 - Mabel and Jared's Senior Project

Jared and Mabel's Senior Project of Singing at Lyngblomsten is done and it went great! Enjoy Peder's awesome photos! Great job Jared and Mabel!

NHS members and volunteers fire up their vocal chords at Jared's house before making the trek through the snow to Lyngblomsten!

Students serenade seniors with their first performance, and "Guantanamera" gets an encore!

The crew is more than happy to keep on singing, bring on performance number two!

Great job on your Senior Project Mabel and Jared! The room was packed, and everyone did an awesome job singing!
